World Refugee Day Celebration

World Refugee Day, held each year on June 20, was established by the United Nations to honor the courage, strength, and determination of women, men, and children who are forced to flee their homes under threat of persecution, conflict, and violence. Please join us to hear the stories of refugees from Sudan, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Burma, and Somalia currently living in Buffalo. A presentation on "Human Rights and Refugees" is included. Alumni Relations is hosting the 10th Year Anniversary of the Thomas Reynolds Center for Special Education & After-School Programs at Daemen College. There will be an opening reception and dedication at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts, in which we will honor the namesake and benefactor, the Honorable Thomas M.Reynolds, and memorialize the late Dr.Patrick Hartwick for his service and dedication to the Center.

Party for the Planet at the Buffalo Zoo

Environmental Education Science Fair hosted by the Sierra Club/Niagara Group in conjunction with Daemen College and the Buffalo Zoo. This will be an environmental forum to share your ideas and see what other areas teachers and students have done. The day will include environmental exhibits, a scavenger hunt for kids, music and a free raffle for Zoo memberships. All events are included with the price of the Zoo admission fee. Open to any high school student who will be in grades 9-12 as of September 2013 and is interested in sports medicine.

Topics to be instructed and practiced: basic first aid for injury, illness (including heat), and wound care, inflammatory process, emergency procedures, basic anatomy, common injuries, and basic taping for ankle, arch, wrist, and shoulder, CPR, AED.
Camp will be both lecture and laboratory based so students will encounter a wide variety of hands on experience.

Transitioning from Childhood to Adulthood: Supporting Individuals with Developmental Disabilities

Keynote Speaker: Nienke P. Dosa, MD, MPH, Director of the NYS Institute for Health Transition Training. The audience for this event is individuals with developmental disabilities and their families and caregivers, healthcare providers, health profession students, and community agency personnel. The presentation is co-sponsored by Daemen College Partners in Health Education for People with Disabilities and Parent Network of WNY. Each camper will experience acting, singing, and dancing LIVE on the MusicalFare stage led by educators and theatre artists Paschal Frisina III, Toni Dentico, Phil Farugia, and a staff of theatre artists with over 30+ years combined professional experience! Each performer will have the opportunity to take workshops on how to improve their craft and sharpen performance skills for their upcoming school auditions and productions. A DVD copy of the final day camp productions will be provided to each camper along with a certificate of completion.
