History and Politics Speaker Series: Dr John Hartman

Four Marches in Montgomery: A Personal Journey
Dr. John Hartman's talk will offer a personal account of a civil rights foot soldier. He will describe the historical circumstances leading up to the Selma to Montgomery march in 1965, including four marches in which he participated.

Free and open to the public.

Keynote Speaker: Janne Siren Academic Festival

Visionary arts leader Dr. Janne Sirén, Peggy Pierce Elfvin Director of Buffalo’s Albright-Knox Art Gallery, will open the College’s Academic Festival with his presentation entitled “Visual Literacy: Learning and Innovation Beyond the Gutenberg Galaxy,”

Dr. Janne Sirén began his appointment as Albright-Knox Art Gallery Director in April 2013. Prior to this, he served as Director of Finland’s Helsinki Art Museum, one of the largest cultural institutions in the Nordic region.

At the Albright-Knox, he has recently launched an innovative public art program in collaboration with the County of Erie and the City of Buffalo and is currently focusing on several other new initiatives.

History and Politics Speaker Series: Dr. Nil Satana

"Transnationalization of Domestic Terrorism: Religion as a Strategic Tool."
Domestic terrorist groups pledging allegiance to, or branching out from, Al-Qaida are on the rise. Dr. Nil Satana will address the evolution and transnationalization of groups such as Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and the Haqqani network, where Osama bin Laden started out his career. How and why do domestic terrorist organizations strategically use religion to recruit militants?

The presentation will be followed by a question and answer session and is part of the Academic Passport Program.

Time for a fall clean-out. Drop off your used electronics on the back porch of Wick Student Center from Friday 9/27-Sunday 9/29 for free recycling in conjunction with the free Environmental Summit on Saturday (8:30am-12:30pm, www.daemen.edu/summit)

Did you know that trash haulers will NOT pick up your TV, stereo, computer etc. from the curb? New legislation requires that these items be properly recycled.

Easy drive-up with large boxes to accept your materials. Open to anyone in the community, so tell your friends.

Environmental Summit

8:30 am - 12:30 pm - Wick Center: Wick Social Room

Free public event featuring speakers, workshops and information
tables about environmental and community sustainability. Speakers
will discuss food safety and bisphenol-A in food packaging, urban
farming and promoting access to fresh foods. A panel discussion will
address sustainability initiatives among local food
manufacturers--McCullagh Coffee, Perry's Ice Cream and Rich Products.
Over 30 organizations will be exhibiting.
