Community Helper Riddles

Assessment Plan

Diagnostic

Prior to this LE, the students complete the Community Helper pre-assessment in writing. The students define a community helper. The students also identify two different community helpers in their neighborhood and identify three things that describe the community helper such as tools, vehicles, clothing or job descriptions. This is used to assess students' prior knowledge.

Formative

Students complete a graphic organizer about a community helper of their choice that they would like to talk about based off of the teacher exemplar. The graphic organizer is divided into different categories as a modification designed to help all students in the class who may need more assistance with listing details about their community helper. The graphic organizer is divided into sections such as what does the community helper wear, what does the community helper use, what does the community helper drive, what does the community helper do and there is also a spot for students to write other facts about their community helper that may not fit in any of the other topics. This will help the students organize their thoughts and is also an easier way to assess what the students know about their community helper.

Summative

The students create a riddle book based on the community helper that they choose to write about. This assessment has a page for the student to list their community helper and then describe characteristics of that community helper. The students then create riddles on the front of the book to list hints about what community helper the student chose. The student then draws a picture of their community helper to match the description. The students are given a student friendly rubric (Appendix T) to use while they complete this part of the lesson. The students' role is to make sure they follow and include the requirements for the Riddle Book. The bolded skills are addressed in the New York State ELA Standard. The standard requires definitions, facts and a concluding statement. The students list the name of their community helper and describe their community helper which covers the definition and facts. At the end of the riddle book, the student draws a picture to demonstrate their community helper.
This rubric is kept with the students' riddle books and will be shown at parent teacher conferences as a reference to why they got a certain grade on their report card. This form of rubric can also be modified to be used for other activities involving any upcoming topic. Students create riddle books to help remember future topics that will be taught. The students have a role in the assessment process. The students are aware that they have a rubric to grade their own work. The students receive a student friendly rubric to use as a reference to self monitor their work.
