A Tale of Two Characters
Student Work
23 students participated but three students were pulled out for resource, speech, and reading help, so they had a hard time completing this task because when they finally had the opportunity to work on the assignment they had forgotten what to do. So they were graded on their product but I did not enter these grades in the grade book since this was the first time we took the information a step further and wrote in paragraph form.
Five students received a distinguished because they completed each part of the assignment with no to little errors. Ten students received a proficient because they completed the venn diagram correctly and had some trouble transferring information to the writing paper. Eight students struggled with both parts of the assignments and received a developing. These students entered second grade below level in all subjects so this lesson was geared towards second grade with some modifications for struggling students.
The students who showed developing need higher level thinking more often at home. I started homework based on the level of the students so these students read a short paragraph and have to answer a question and write a written response in 1-2 complete sentences.
The students who received proficient understand how to compare and contrast two characters and now work on writing more with the paraprofessional sentence by sentence to show how to use transition words as well as complete sentences.
The distinguished students are working in a literature circle reading a fourth grade book answering higher level thinking questions. They have jobs to complete after reading a specific section of the book and then come to school to discuss. I facilitated to start the discussion and then the students started discussing the book with each other. The goal is to have them interact with text and make connections.
