Three formal assessment tools are used during this Learning Experience. In additional to the formal assessments, I will also used informal assessments such as daily observations, and oral questioning.
Diagnostic Assessment:
On the first day of the learning experience, the students were given a pre-assessment. The pre-assessment consist of matching the correct letter to its definition and a short response section. The pre-assessment was given to gage how much the students knew about literary terms and if they understood the concept of genre. The pre-assessment will be used as a diagnostic assessment.
Formative Assessment:
Students will be formatively assessed through journal entries, and guided questions worksheets. Every day before the lesson begins the student will summarize on an index card what they have read up to date and give their interpretation of it. In reviewing the cards the teacher will identify if the material is being presented thoroughly or if he/she needs to modify instruction. The journal entries are not graded until the end of the week to ensure that the students are completing the assignment. The worksheets are only collected if they are taken home for homework (to ensure the material is returned to school and into their folders) otherwise the worksheets will be completed in class and used as a study guide. The following rubric is used to evaluate journal entries.
Summative Assessment:
The summative assessment will be given at the end of the unit. The students will be given a two part test. The first part will consist of quiz. The second part will consist of an essay written in the Regents Critical Lens format. All the information presented during the learning experience should assist the students in accurately answering the questions on the quiz and completing the essay. The following rubric is used to evaluate the essay.
