Assessment Plan
The students were given a pretest before starting the community workers unit. This pretest was used to determine if the students has prior knowledge of the various community workers that would be discussed. A post test was also given to determine if the students gained knowledge as a result of the community workers unit The post test was identical to the pretest. The results of the pre and post tests were used to determine how effective the community workers unit was in enhancing the knowledge of the students.
Throughout the community workers unit, students are informally assessed by questioning. For this particular learning experience, a teacher made rubric was used to evaluate the work of the students. Informal assessment is also used during this learning experience in the form of questioning.
As suggested by the cooperating teacher, due to the age/comprehension level of the students, a student rubric was not used for this learning experience.
Explanation of Rubric
A three element rubric is used to evaluate the work of the students. The rubric is used to assess the students’ drawing of the community worker, and the sentence that is written. The elements that this rubric contains are ideas and content, organization, and sentence fluency. For each element, the students have an opportunity to receive 3 points. To receive full credit for each element of the rubric, the student’s work must meet all of the criteria under each category. If all of the criteria to receive a score of 3 are not met, then the student will receive a score of two for that element.
Ideas and Content
The ideas and content element of this rubric is used to assess the student’s drawing. To receive a score of 3, the viewer must be about to determine which community worker is being discussed by the picture alone. To receive a score of 2, the student has drawn a community worker that is recognizable, but the viewer will not be able to determine which community worker is being discussed without reading the sentence. To receive a score of 1, the viewer is not able to determine the community worker being discussed even after reading the sentence.
Organization
The organization element of the rubric deals with: the spelling of the words, the usage of Boards A and Board B, and the writing of the students. To receive a score of 3, the student must write one complete sentence. All words in the sentence must be spelled correctly. Both the sight words and the name of the community worker must be spelled correctly. If the words are spelled correctly, then it can be concluded that the students has used both Boards A and B. To receive a score of 2, the student did not write a complete sentence. The student writes a two word sentence, or merely names the community worker. The student attempts to use boards A and B, but makes errors in spelling the sight words and/or the community worker. A score of 1 highlights that the student does not write a complete sentence. The writing looks more like an attempt to write from left to right. Three or more spelling mistakes are made. Students who receive a score of 1 did not use high frequency words.
Sentence Fluency
The sentence fluency element of this rubric assesses the student’s writing. The areas that this element assesses are: the comprehensibility of the sentence, usage of punctuation, the usage of spacing, and the directions of the letters. To receive a score of 3, the sentence is comprehendible to both the reader and the writer. This student correctly uses punctuation, capitulation, and spacing between words. A score of 2 indicates that the sentence is comprehendible to the writer, but the reader may need some assistance. A score of 2 indicates that the student makes an attempt to use punctuation. The student may put the punctuation in the wrong place, or may use a question mark instead of a period. Spacing between the words is not consistent. Capitol letters are used, but it may not be at the beginning of the sentence. Only one letter, if any, is facing the wrong direction.
To receive a score of 1, the sentence is incomprehensible to both the reader and the writer. No periods, capitalization, or spacing is used. Two or more letters are written incorrectly.
The rubric that was used to score the written sentence and the drawing of the students’ is on the page that follows.
