Instructional Task Learning Objectives Student Work Assessment Tools

Working step by step with the teacher:
- count out and illustrate a subtraction problem using Cheerios as a manipulative and subtraction mats

-fill in the correct numbers, in the appropriate number slots, for the number sentence.

The students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of subtraction by writing subtraction number sentences, using Cheerios as a manipulative.

Students will solve and write out a subtraction number sentence, as concluded by using Cheerios as a manipulative.

Informal Observation Checklist: based on the completion and accuracy of the Cheerio manipulative representations and number sentences.

*Students will receive a check if completed.  A plus sign will be added for accuracy and a minus sign if incorrect.

With limited guidance from the teacher:
- roll the dice to find the number to subtract from the prepared dotted worksheets-fill in the correct numbers, in the appropriate number slots, for the mathematical sentence.

The students will be able to cross off the appropriate number of dots, according to the dice, to represent a subtraction problem.

The students will be able to write the subtraction sentence they have created, in the appropriate number slots.

Students will create a subtraction problem, using dice and a prepared dotted worksheet.  They will then write the corresponding number sentence in the appropriate number slots.

Immediate Verbal Feedback: based on the completion and accuracy of the dot subtraction illustration and number sentences.

*The students will be told if their illustration and number sentence is correct.  If not, the teacher will correct the problem with the student.

Working without guidance from the teacher:
- draw and cross out pictures, representing a subtraction problem.

- write a subtraction number sentence that corresponds to the drawn picture.

The students will be able to independently draw representations for a subtraction problem.

The students will be able to independently write a subtraction number sentence, according to their drawing.

Students will solve a subtraction problem by drawing visual representations of the numbers and then continue to write the subtraction number sentence on the Subtraction Illustration Worksheet  .

The Beginning Subtraction Rubric will be used to assess each child on the following attributes:

- Pictorial Representation of the equation

- Written/Verbal Representation of the equation using the correct numbers

-Written/Verbal Representation of the equation using the correct operation sign
