Graphing Picture and Bar Graphs

Assessment Plan

Participation and Accuracy: A Participation and Accuracy checklist is used to record student activity during lessons and the points transfer to an overall participation grade.
Students receive a check plus if their answer was correct and a check if they participated but their answer was incorrect.

Diagnostic: This lesson did not have an initial diagnostic tool because it was spontaneous. In the future the lesson will have two pre-assessment work sheets. A Farm Animal Picture Graph and a Bar Graph of Pets from www.superteacherworksheets.com.

Formative:After the PowerPoint presentations, students work on the Cubes Picture Graph and M&Ms Bar Graph sheets [1, 2], students work on these two sheets independently first using cube manipulatives for the picture graph and then M&Ms “fun size” bags for the bar graph.

Summative: After the learning experience, students complete the Picking Pumpkin Foods Scholastic News: Reading a Bar Graph sheet [1]. The sheet surveys a class’s favorite pumpkin food. Words and pictures are used to represent the data collected and organized into a bar graph. The students must bubble in the amount of food represented by each picture in the question relating to the bar graph data. Students must also determine which food more children select and calculate the total amount of two foods together. This assessment is used to see if students understand how to read a bar graph and also to understand if students understand picture representations.

Future lessons will use two sheets similar to the formative assessment sheets. Button Picture Graph and Skittles Bar Graph sheets [1, 2] are comparative summative assessments that congruently and validly compare to the formative assessment. Both graphs will use buttons and the Graph Rubric will be used to assess the student work.
