With limited assistance from the teacher refer to details and examples while explaining what the text says explicitly after reading about the Iditarod.   TSWBAT write specific facts about the Iditarod and mushers, and explain the text explicitly while also referring to details and examples from the text.  Refer to explicit details and examples to complete an All About the Iditarod facts worksheet.

A formative checklist called the thumbs up pre-assessment found on page 23 will be used to check for student completion.

Students independently write their paragraphs by drawing inferences from text referring to details and examples. Independently TSWBAT accurately answer questions about the history of the Iditarod while drawing inferences from text and referring to details and examples from the text. Complete a History of the Iditarod question sheet while drawing inferences from text.

Are Sled Dogs being Mistreated Rubric (appendix F) will be used based upon the following attributes;
- Refers to details and examples from the text.   
- Accurately drawing inferences from text when responding to questions
- Grammar
- Neatness

- Punctuation

The students write a paragraph explaining their opinion about sled dogs. They use specific details from the text in order to support their opinion about sled dog racing Independently TSWBAT write a paragraph and explicitly explain, using details, if they think the dogs are being mistreated. Students write a paragraph entitled, Are Sled Dogs Being Mistreated? Drawing inferences and explicitly referring to details paragraph.
