Measuring to the Nearest 1/4 inch

Assessment Plan

Pre-assessment (Diagnostic)

Prior to this LE, the students complete “Measuring to the Nearest ¼ inch” pre-assessment
(Appendix D) by measuring the objects listed on the page. Objects that are not a part of the page (ie. post-it and paperclip) are in separate bags for the students. This pre-assessment is completed prior to starting the LE and is completed as morning work. The students are assessed on whether or not they include the unit (inches) and the accuracy of their measurements. Expected strategies used by the students include using a ruler and measuring to the nearest ¼ inch. Many students may measure to the nearest inch, not understanding the concept of the nearest ¼ inch.

Formative

Students orally state measurements, represented on an enlarged ruler (Appendix E), to the nearest ¼ inch. The students come up to the board to point out and label the measurements. The observation for this portion of the lesson consists of listening to their responses and walking around looking at the students’ individual rulers, while making anecdotal notes. The ¼ inch is represented in blue, so look for the marks to informally assess the students’ learning. If a student is having a difficult time with this portion of the lesson, guide them through the process, while the other students are completing their rulers. Examples of student rulers are found in Appendix F.

Summative

The students use the strategies of “jumping” lines by four and looking for the second longest lines between the whole numbers to measure to the nearest ¼ inch. The summative assessment has lines and pictures that the students measure for homework. The homework is scored with Measuring to the Nearest ¼ inch Rubric (Appendix I). The rubric assesses the students’ ability to complete the given problems, measure accurately to the nearest ¼ inch and label the correct unit. The bolded skills are addressed in the New York State Math Performance Indicators 4.M.2 and 4.R.4, and the rubric can be modified to be used as an assessment for any form of measurement. Also, the students complete the “Funbrain Measurement Practice” center (Appendix H) for extra credit. They are able to assess their knowledge of the subject because the website corrects the students if they are wrong on any of the problems.

_______ / 8 points

Before corrections are completed, all measurements of the lines and items on the page are to the nearest ¼ inch.

Before corrections are completed, 1-2 measurements of the lines and items on the page are not to the nearest ¼ inch.

Before corrections are completed, 3-4  measurements of the lines and items on the page are not to the nearest ¼ inch.

Before corrections are completed, 5 or more measurements of the lines and items on the page are not to the nearest ¼ inch.
Or
All of the measurements on the page are measured to another measurement (ie.) to the nearest whole, 1/2 , 1/16 of an inch.

Labeling of correct unit

(Weight: 1 point)

_______ / 4 points

Before corrections are completed, the correct unit is labeled for every measurement. The unit for every measurement is inches ( in.).

Before corrections are completed, only half of the problems (4) include the unit of measurement: inches.

Before corrections are completed, a different unit of measurement, instead of inches, is labeled for the measurements.

None of the measurements include a unit of measurement.
