Assessment Plan

This learning experience includes assessments that are diagnostic, formative and summative.
The diagnostic assessment includes a pre/post tests that the students will take 1:1 with the instructor to evaluate the specific skills the students possess prior to the instruction of the patterning lessons and at the completion of the patterning lessons.
The summative assessment includes the final product the student completes that includes extending the pattern to make a pattern snake using one of the specific patterns that were taught during the instructional time.  These pattern snakes are made using the wooden math pattern blocks then transferred to a blank strip using the simulated paper pattern blocks the students have used when making their pattern trains and glued down to create the snake.
The formative assessment includes the two pattern trains the students made doing the two patterns introduced during the lessons then transferred to a blank strip and copied using the simulated paper pattern blocks and glued down.

Most of the students were able to copy both of the patterns which gave 50% of them a 3 point score.  The majority of the students were unable to recognize, produce or extend a pattern and that resulted in a high number of developing students.  The proficient students were able to produce an ABAB pattern but were unable to recognize one among a group of 3 different patterns.  Only the distinguished students were able to recognize, copy, produce and extend both the ABAB and AABB patterns on the pre-test.

After the completion of the 3 lessons, most of the students were able to recognize, copy, produce and extend an ABAB pattern independently.  Many struggled with the AABB pattern on the producing and extending independently.

Pre-Post Test Directions

Question #1

  • There are three different patterns on this page.
  • They are numbered 1, 2 and 3 (point to the numbers as you say them.
  • Point to the pattern that is an ABAB pattern (the student can point to the pattern itself or the number)
  • Do the same for the AABB pattern.

Question #2

  • Copy  this ABAB pattern here using the math pattern blocks (point to the line where the students should display their work)
  • Teacher should point to the pattern and then to the blank line if the student needs the directions repeated.
  • Do the same for the AABB pattern.

Question #3

  • Produce an ABAB pattern on this line (point to the blank line) using the math pattern blocks.
  • Do the same for the AABB pattern.

Question #4

  • Extend an ABAB pattern 5 times on this line (point to the clank line) using the math pattern blocks.
  • Do the same for the AABB pattern.
